Vargas was one of the founding members of the Pocho-Che collective in San Franciscos Mission District in the 1970s, and by all accounts was the engine behind many of Pocho-Ches cultural and activist initiatives. This book collects his prose and poetry from that turbulent decade, including an autobiographical sketch that relates his experiences growing up in La Mission, his politicization in the 1960s, and his commitment to the Sandinista cause in Nicaragua in the 1970s.

After the Sandinistas forced dictator Anastasio Somoza to resign in 1979, Vargas became the Nicaraguan cultural attaché to the United States. The poems are at times loose and angry, but powered by a beautiful commitment to family and homeland that tempers the anger.
